I finished my burrito. One of my male friends did not. The other male friend commented, "Tasha was able to finish her burrito and you weren't," making me self-conscious about how much I ate.Tashahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18003212484944965101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6730657139931062421.post-54865461059911712532009-06-29T18:58:49.988-05:002009-06-29T18:58:49.988-05:00Socialization at its worst.Socialization at its worst.lindsayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13285797515594923013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6730657139931062421.post-79363717622245770422009-06-29T18:58:24.918-05:002009-06-29T18:58:24.918-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.lindsayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13285797515594923013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6730657139931062421.post-8535048812652265202009-06-29T11:39:05.187-05:002009-06-29T11:39:05.187-05:00I've had cashiers initiate commentary on my fo...I've had cashiers initiate commentary on my food purchases, even though I don't say anything. They know nothing about me, my life, who I was buying it for, the size of my household, whatever. But if I bought anything that fell outside the bounds off healthy eating, 4/5 times the cashier would make comments. "Is that ALL for you?" "Wow, that's a lot of junk." or whatever.

It's none of their business whether it was for me or whether I was throwing a big party for a bunch of teenagers.

Anyway...if other people have had similar things happen to them, I can understand them making preemptive excuses to keep the judgments at bay.wonderingnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6730657139931062421.post-10217382265961736102009-06-28T20:06:09.241-05:002009-06-28T20:06:09.241-05:00This. I was literally just thinking about this, because I think that so much of the bad relationships we have with our bodies as women are directly related to bad relationships with food.

Even for women without an official disorder, as you say, there is a nasty relationship. Every bite must be guilt-ridden, even if it's something healthy and we're hungry. I know that this is true for a measurable percentage of men, as well (which says something to society at large), but the vast majority of women view food as something to be minimized, avoided, controlled, and only truly enjoyed in the company of other women, and with an "excuse," if at all.

Attaching guilt to an inherently vital life function is probably a bad idea.Zippahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14821858545952786165noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6730657139931062421.post-44431501020656315682009-06-28T13:16:18.275-05:002009-06-28T13:16:18.275-05:00"You must think I’m fat for buying so much fo..."You must think I’m fat for buying so much food"
God that makes me sad. The idea that we make judgements about people's size (or moral character) based on what they eat as opposed to what they look like (or their belief system).Sarangahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03545162612237984546noreply@blogger.com
