Tilly and the Wall

Tilly and the Wall - Not only is it good music, their percussion is tap dancing. Awesome? Yes.

um... how is this relevant to feminism?

Women making music is awesome. And awesome women have a place on any feminist blog.

And if this particular post doesn't suit your palette, we have many, many more for you to read and comment on.

Awesome - thanks for an introduction to what looks like an amazing group. People often forget that women making their voices heard is, in many ways, an intrinsically feminist act - and these women chose to do so while clothed, even cooler.

Women in music is nothing new... Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Heart, thousands of semi-talented 90's pop singers, Country artists. Women have been putting out albums for the last 50 years. And have been treated equally on the radio/in sales. also, somebody find me the nude music video that LPH mentioned...

Tyler, I would like to challenge your statement: Women...have been treated equally on the radio/in sales.

Women in the business are faced with a lot of pressures that men are not. From a young age, women are taught that becoming sexy will make them money. Guys can make a lot of money merely by being cute, and not being overtly sexual. It doesn't work that way for girls. Perhaps the ends are the same. I don't know for sure. But I would argue that the means of achieving those ends are different for the men and women in the business.

Men also do not have to be attractive to become super-stars in the music industry or in Hollywood. As to T's other quip, I would say that most women artist who make music videos that run on MTV etc. eventually do one or two in which they are scantily clad. I don't believe the same is true for men.

If one of the impersonators has some free time, it would be interesting to know if there is any different in the entertainment industry in how women and men are compensated. There is still a pay gap between women and men's salaries, with women generally earning less for equal work. It would be interesting to know if the same were true for a relatively liberal town like Hollywood.

Aimee, I don't listen to artists b/c they are attractive. I listen to them if they sound good. Idc about anything else.

LPH, you did not say scantily clad, you said without clothes. I'm sorry if I am being nitpicky, but that is a huge differance.

That, in my eyes, proves your bias. Sounds like you take what you choose to do and assume it applies to everyone else (and don't care!), which is a tragic falsity.

That's all I will say about that.

Btw, I just downloaded "Bad Education" by Tilly and the Wall, and I think I'm gonna play it on the Female Impersonators Radio Hour this Thursday!

I'd have to say, I agree with Tyler - I don't choose a band based on what they look like. I choose a band based on the style of music, the lyrics, and the voices themselves. For example - Rascal Flatts - AMAZING lead vocalist... sadly he's not much to look at, but that doesn't stop me from listening to them, nor does it prevent them from being one of my favorite bands.

Hate to tell you this - but looks are not everything.

You may not care what your favorite artists look like, but the record labels they are signed to do. The only reason you are able to hear these bands is because they have record deals with major labels, who decide to sign bands based on talent, yes, but also, espically for women, sexiness.

Sweetness on Bad Education - I'll be in class but I wish I could listen.
